| The Rank Progression Chart depicted shows the path students of Greenpoint Shotokan Karate take as they embark on their karate journey from beginner to advanced practitioner.
White and yellow belts make up our beginner level, followed by the novice level of orange and green belt. The intermediate level consists of blue belt and purple belt and this is followed by our advanced level of brown and black belt.
Students test every month and are required to earn 3 colored stripes before being eligible to test for a specific belt. On the 4th month, depending upon the number of stripes and the number of classes attended, the student will then test for their next belt. In the intermediate and advanced stages, testing is spread out over a longer period of time allowing the student to become more proficient executing the higher level techniques. At these stages however, Sensei Borkowsky will make the final determination if the student is ready to move on to the next level.
All children under the age of 16 passing their black belt examination will be awarded the rank of shodan. These students will be classified as junior black belt and designated shodan-ho. This classification is given to distinguish between children and adults.
